Sinking in Slussen

Sinking in Slussen

by richard.lovgren@ccit.se / Tuesday, 23 April 2019 / Published in 2019

Not surprisingly, when you think of Heavy Lifts, you think of lifting. But now that Slussen is being transformed into a safer and more attractive place to be, we were given another task…

We are currently preparing the groundwork for the lowering of two culverts that have been brought from Copenhagen for transportation to Stockholm.
Once the culverts have reached the bottom, they will then be pulled and fastened together to allow the passage of heating and district heating pipes to the other side.

So our job is to lower these culverts to the bottom and pull them together to their final position. Then we have to continuously keep adjusting, because the water level is higher sometimes, and we have to make sure that the equipment has a constant voltage at all times.

So why is Slussen being rebuilt?

The rebuilding of the lock is important both for Stockholm and the rest of the Mälardalen region. The risk of flooding in the Mälaren Valley is currently far too great, and the possibilities for draining water from Lake Mälaren are too small to prevent flooding.

The reconstruction of Slussen enables the expansion of Mälaren’s drainage capacity, thus reducing the risk of flooding – and securing drinking water for two million people in the Mälar Valley.

We should also not forget that Slussen is 80 years old. It needs to be demolished and rebuilt from the ground up, while adapting to the new needs of today’s Stockholmers.

Once again, we at Tunga Lyft are involved in making Sweden a little better.
