A bridge to a bridge

A bridge to a bridge

by richard.lovgren@ccit.se / Friday, 24 May 2019 / Published in 2019

When the Älvsborg Bridge Inaugurated in 1966 in Gothenburg, it was Sweden’s longest bridge at 900 meters. It extends from Rödastensmotet at the Sandarna in the south almost up to the Ivarsbergsmotet on Hisingen in the south north.

In March, DAB Group started a renovation of the Älvsborg Bridge that will last until 2021. There is a lot of important maintenance work that needs to be done to maintain the more than 50-year-old bronze standard and to reduce the risk of acute failures.

Risk of harmful substances

In this type of renovation, there is a risk that stormwater (temporary runoff on the ground or on a structure) from the bridge may carry harmful substances into the water below.

To prevent this, they needed help to get the water out of the bridge column’s foundation into the solid ground in order to clean it. We solved this by renting and building a 48-meter-long truss bridge.

The truss weighs 12 tons and will allow the transport authority to place the necessary electricity and water pipes.
